I have heard luke at local poetry nights around long beach and the books description i have to say is right on. He is a great poet i love hearing..and reading his poems.
Luke Salazars' poetry is a mix of Dark Humor and deep insight. This is the perfect book to have next to your toilet! Don't worry he won't be offended.
When my friend told me about this book, I bought it right away, but little did I expect to be so transported. Luke Salazar is a wonderful poet, and he speaks to me! My generation grew up on poetry, especially the spoken word, and I continue to this day to read poetry aloud with a friend who comes over every week. We are really enjoying California Burning, and I encourage others to take a taste!
I do not read poetry under normal circumstances. I bought this book from Mr. Salazar the same way you'd buy your buddy's band's album, as both of us work in the editorial department of a newswire service in Los Angeles. Like I said, poetry isn't my thing; this was a gesture of support without much expectation.
Well, "California Burning" knocked my socks off. More than that, it inspired me to do my own poetry. Here is my review in poem form
This book delights me on the pot,
a compliment beyond measure.
For the toilet's the only place
where I read for pleasure.
It's the truth. This book has a permanent place in my bathroom magazine rack. I enjoy it every day, twice if I have eaten a lot the day before. I can't wait for the next installment.
Luke is a very versatile author and throws his emotion into the works. It's kind of a throwback to some of the earlier beat works like Ginsburg and Kerouac. You knew what they felt because they blasted it at you, and all you could do is watch and listen, and try to take it all in. This book is chalk full of awesome!
I could tell you I'm one of those types who does nothing but drink tea and reads only the finest prose from the iconic literary troubadours of the past. No I read Dean Koontz and occasionally Oscar Wilde -- and no I'm not ashamed to admit this. So when I happened upon "California Burning," I was expecting the normal fare from modern poets hunkered down in smoky rooms with angst and a quick turn of phrase. I couldn't have been more wrong (I would use the word stupid, but that's a mean word).
Luke Salazar's words, humor, freedom and honesty between the cover and the end of the book were captivating, cutting and courageous (Yes, I want to use alliteration to prove my point). Every experience and triumph and loss are unabashedly offered with a brash, cultured finesse and it still has me smiling. Luke no doubt will become someone talked about, admired and published again.
My craft and heart have been made purer and happier for having sat down and put my eyes to these pages. I can't wait for the next collection of poetry.
I actually got to see the author read a few of the poems in person, and they were wonderful. The quality of writing is great, and this has turned into one of my favorite collections of poetry. Definitely something everyone who loves poetry should check out.
