Susan Cameron, a young Missouri woman, arrives in Wyoming Territory determined to homestead on her own. Her nearest neighbors, Ellen Watson Averell and James “Jimmy” Averell, operate a small road ranch not far from the Oregon Trail on homestead land formerly grazed illegally by Albert Bothwell’s cattle. Ellen purchased a small herd of cattle and brand, but Bothwell claimed the Averells were operating a rural brothel and that Ellen took calves for her “favors.” Trouble haunts Susan, her veterinarian friend, Michael, and the Averells from the moment Susan attempts to take possession of her new homestead land, culminating in the hangings of both Ellen and Jimmy Averell by six prominent cattlemen, who then spread vicious lies in their controlled Cheyenne newspaper, calling Ellen “Cattle Kate.” The mystery deepens when the cattlemen are brought to trial and all the witnesses to the hangings have died or disappeared and Susan and Michael are kidnapped by hired gunmen . . .

No Escape by Jean Henry Mead is very well-written and beautifully edited. This is based on a true story with some fictional elements- the end result is an edge of your seat, nail biter.Positives- As stated, well written and almost perfectly edited (I found one silly typo) The sense of menace in this story was palpable and the end result satisfying.
Negatives. One of the reasons I steer clear of romance novels (which this is not but... it skirts the genre) is the formula involved- Heroine finds hero... through a series of mis-adventures heroine begins to trust hero- finally, hero and heroine ride off into the sunset.
This story follows that formula- up to a point. In this case, the heroine is almost obnoxiously determined to stubborn herself into certain doom. To the point I wanted to slap her face. Only the most profoundly patient hero would have put up with this young woman's will full nastiness. Finally, she started to see the light and just how close she came to losing everything- including her life.
Still, it was an entertaining read with the added benefit of fine descriptions of just how wild and corrupt the old west really was.

No Escape The Sweetwater Tragedy Jean Henry Mead 9781931415415 Books Reviews
There is nothing like a well written book. From the moment you start, you are captivated by a strong willed woman seeking her freedom and rights. She leaves home alone and takes a train out to where women are allowed to vote and own land. She wants her freedom! She is tired of having men tell her what to do and how to do it.
Once in town she is now seeing, with her own eyes, the way of the frontier. She meets a kind man who takes her under his wing. Together they find out where she can sign up and pay for a stake in the land. They meet a sweet family who help them in more ways than one.
What happens along the way is up to you to find out. You will read about the glorious sunsets, the beautiful expanse of grasses. You will read about the storms. Most of all, you will read about the people.
This book is filled with the history of our country. Just think how beautiful the plains were before we built.

NO ESCAPE THE SWEETWATER TRAGEDY, by Jean Henry Mead, is a must read for both historical buffs and mystery lovers. You can count of Mead to get her facts right and tell a riveting story. If you're in the mood for a trip back to 1889 Wyoming, then this is the book for you!
My husband read this book. He said it was a stupid book, lousy story line. A string of one page adventures. Trying to include spots of history without checking dates for accuracy, the writer is clueless
No Escape The Sweetwater Tragedy by Jean Henry Mead is an excellent story, combining history and fiction.
In the late 1800s, Ellen Watson Averell and James Averall are hanged for crimes they didn't commit in this historical account. Ms. Mead tells this true story through the eyes of a fictional character named Susan Cameron.
The cattlemen in the Sweetwater area of Wyoming will have things their way, no matter what has to be done, including lying, cheating and stealing.
Jean Henry Mead took me on a long journey with these characters, both real and fictional, that I won't soon forget. The injustice these people suffered was heartbreaking.
I highly recommend No Escape The Sweetwater Tragedy to readers who enjoy history, fiction and wonderful characters. You'll put the book down and remember these events for a long time.
This story contains a blend of fact and fiction. It is told in the point of view of a fictional heroine, Susan, who is determined to homestead, but finds that she has chosen a dangerous spot to build her new cabin. This fictional story threads the facts behind the true-life tragedy of the hanging of Jim and Ellen Averell (also known as Ella Watson and "Cattle Kate". The Averell's got on the wrong side of the local cattlemen, who desperately wanted their land for water and free grazing. The events leading up to the murders and the ensuing cover-up are recounted through the eyes of a fellow homesteader, who is also threatened. A tension-filled tale that is filled with careful historical detail, adventure and romance.
When Susan Cameron arrives in Sweetwater Valley, Wyoming, she is full of hope for her new life. At last, she will answer to no one but herself-she is free to pursue her dream of owning her own land and making her own choices. She gets off to a rocky start, but undaunted, doggedly follows her plan to file for her own section of land. Along the way, she meets Michael O'Brien who shows a romantic interest in her. Susan, however, meets Michael's every effort with frosty response. This is her time to prove herself and nothing, no one, will deter her.
Early on, Susan has the good fortune to meet her generous and helpful neighboring homesteaders, Ella and her husband Jim. Susan soon learns that cattlemen are actively making life miserable for homesteaders. The free grazing land cattlemen have used for years is being "ruined" by homesteaders' houses, fences and crops, tying up precious water resources. The lawlessness and tragedy that follow is a bleak part of western history.
This excellent historical novel, No Escape The Sweetwater Tragedy, by Jean Henry Mead, is based on an actual 1889 Wyoming incident involving the vigilante hangings of Ellen "Ella" Watson-Averell and her husband, James. The homesteaders were falsely accused of running a "brawdy" house" in exchange for rustled cattle. To carry the story, the author has drawn a fictitious character, a composite of thousands of single women who attempted to prove up on homesteads, some successfully, some not.
Versatile author Jean Henry Mead's impeccable research is evident in this gripping fast-paced tale.
